The majority of HIV-STD tests do not really look for the
virus itself but seeking antibodies that indicate the
presence of HIV-STD in the body.
When a person has HIV-STD, your immune system produces
antibodies to fight the virus. Unlike the antibodies
produced by our immune system, which successfully fought
off other infections, antibodies against HIV-STD have no
effect on viruses. But the tests detect their presence
in large quantities. The antibody takes between 3 and 6
months to appear in detectable quantities. Therefore,
when someone makes an HIV-STD test, do not detect an
infection that could have occurred within the past 6
months.

Classes of HIV-STD Testing
* Tests EIA or ELISA. These are the most common
types of HIV-STD tests. Both consist of two phases, and
usually must wait between 1 and 2 weeks for results. The
first phase is the initial identification, during which
the blood sample is analysed to detect antibodies to
HIV-STD. If the results of the identification are
positive, confirming the presence of antibodies against
HIV-STD gets to make identification on the same sample.
* Inmuno electro transferencia (Western blot). If
the EIA test or ELISA returns to throw a second positive
result was always confirmed by another test called
inmunoelectrotransferencia (Western blot). If both tests
show a positive result, it is virtually confirmed that
the person is infected with the HIV-STD virus. In
isolated cases, the EIA test can give false positive
results because some of the different antibodies that
fight HIV-STD respond to the evidence.
* Rapid tests. The rapid tests are the alternative
to the rapid EIA and ELISA tests, and have exactly the
same precision. While the results of a blood test
standard delay of 1 to 2 weeks, rapid tests are ready in
just 20 minutes. The rapid tests are not available in
many places and often are costly. As in the case of EIA
and ELISA tests, the results of rapid tests also should
be confirmed with testing of inmunoelectrotransferencia.
* STD Tests home. There are many home-testing kits
for free or for sale online, but only one of them, the
Home Access kit is approved by the Food and Drug
Administration of the United States (FDA, for its
acronym in Spanish). The Home Access test is available
at most local pharmacies and operates in much the same
way that evidence of diabetes home. The user pricked his
finger and put blood in a specially prepared card. Then
the card is sent to a laboratory, where it is analyzed.
The results are available (via telephone, with an
anonymous identification number) in about 3 days. There
is also a kit Home Access Express, with which results
can be obtained anonymously in the next business day.
The kit Express is slightly more expensive than the kit
that gives results in 3 days. The Home Access test
accurately identifies 99.5% of the HIV-STD-negative
blood samples and 100% of the blood samples with
positive results known.
