HIV Urine Testing
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can destroy your body’s only defense against infection - the immune system. Transmitted primarily through sexual intercourse or IV drug use, the virus is also passed on to babies during birth or breast feeding. The presence of other Sexually Transmitted Disease make HIV infection easier. It is estimated that more than 40 million people across the planet are infected with HIV, including nearly 1,000,000 in the United States.

Individual symptoms may be different. Some will have no initial symptoms, while others will experience flu-like symptoms - fever, sore throat, glandular swelling - that disappear after a few weeks. While infected people may not have symptoms, they remain contagious and can pass HIV on to others. As the disease progresses, those with HIV may have fever, sweating, lack of energy, rapid weight loss, swelling of the lymph nodes, and recurring outbreaks of herpes. A person is diagnosed with AIDS - acquired immunodeficiency syndrome - once the immune systems weakens and they experience additional illnesses.

A cure for HIV infection has yet to be found, but people can receive treatment to ensure longer, healthier lives.

Herpes 1 & 2
The two types of herpes virus results in painful, recurrent blisters on or near the mouth or genitals. HSV-1 will cause cold sores or fever blisters. HSV-2 is the virus causing genital blisters. There are cases where HSV-1 affects the genitals and HSV-2 affects the lips and mouth. The commonality of genital herpes is illustrated by the fact that nearly 1 million new cases are reported each year. An estimated 20 percent of Americans above the age of 12 carry genital herpes, with most of these having no knowledge they have the virus.

Herpes is generally transmitted via vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be passed from the mouth to the genitals, or the genitals to the mouth, during oral sex. If blisters are present, it is more easily transmitted, but can even be passed along if symptoms are not overt. If a woman has an outbreak of genital herpes while pregnant, she can transmit the disease to her baby, which may cause death or brain damage. There is not cure for herpes, however, medication can lessen the severity of the symptoms.

Gonorrhea / Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most prevalent bacterial STD in America, with three million new cases each year. The majority of Chlamydia cases go undetected because of the lack of symptoms in most infected people. Common symptoms are a burning sensation during urination, unusual discharge from the vagina or penis, or bleeding between menstrual periods.

If left untreated Chlamydia in women may suffer pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and long-term pelvic pain. Men with Chlamydia face greater risk of infertility, arthritis, and other serious problems. Babies may develop eye and lung infections during birth if their mothers have Chlamydia. Usually one dose of antibiotics will cure Chlamydia.

With more than a half million new cases every year, Gonorrhea is second on the chart of most common bacterial STD in America. Symptoms in men include an unusual discharge from the penis and/or painful urination. Gonorrhea in women does not usually carry symptoms, but some report a burning sensation when urinating, pain during sex, unusual discharge from the vagina, or abdominal pain.

Without treatment, gonorrhea may result in infertility and urinary problems. Untreated genital gonorrhea in women can cause PID, leading to infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and long-term pelvic pain. If pregnant women are not treated, gonorrhea can also cause eye infections in their newborn children.Gonorrhea is also easily cured, usually with a single dose of antibiotics.

Syphilis
Syphilis rates have been declining in the United States for many years. In 1999 only 35,600 cases were reported.

Syphilis, if not treated can be fatal and develops in three phases. The first phase happens 10 to 90 days after initial infection. It includes small, round, painless sores on the penis, vagina, anus, rectum, or mouth. These symptoms can go away without treatment in three to six weeks. Direct contact with these sores can transmit syphilis, but like other STDs, it can be passed on with no visible sores. During the second phase, infected people develop a highly contagious rash on the palms, soles or other parts of the body. Additional symptoms are fever, swollen lymph glands, hair loss, headaches, extreme tiredness, and muscle loss. The third phase of Syphilis may not appear for years. During this stage people are not contagious, but the disease will damage organs and destroy blood vessels and nerve cells in the brain and spine, causing cardiovascular problems, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death.

Syphilis infection during pregnancy can kill the baby before birth or cause permanent disabilities such as blindness or damage to the heart, brain, or skeleton.

Syphilis may be cured with a single dose of penicillin, but any damage already caused can not be reversed.

Symptoms of hepatitis are noticed several weeks after infection and include fever, yellow skin, extreme tiredness, upset stomach, and abdominal pain. Chronic infection is also possible with HBV and HCV. This leads to liver damage or cancer.

Treatment for HBV and HCV infection are often ineffective, but vaccines will prevent HBV infection.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) / Genital Warts Test

Test Overview

AllTests no longer provides collection services for this test due to the severely personal nature of the procedure. HPV test kits and shipping supplies will be provided for donors to bring to their personal physician.

A human papillomavirus (HPV) test will detect an HPV infection and the type of HPV present. An HPV test checks for the genetic material (DNA) of the human papillomavirus with a sample of cells collected from the cervix .

Some types of HPV cause common, plantar, filiform, or flat warts, and some cause genital warts, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that affects men and women.

The riskier types of HPV in women (including types 16, 18, 31, and 45) cause a change in the cells of the cervix that may be seen as abnormal changes on a Pap test. These abnormal cell changes may resolve o without treatment, but untreated cervical cell changes may lead to cervical cancer.
